Gaming used to be an escapist’s dream. Recently, however, the real world outside the screens of our favorite FPS or role-playing games has filtered abundantly into these screen-bound experiences. Today, we look to GTA V, specifically GTA Online, its latest DLC update, and how realistic the fictional criminal city of Los Santos is about to become.

Rockstar has been promising a new update to GTA Online, a multiplayer experience that exists within the realm of Grand Theft Auto V, and the publisher is about to deliver a real-life whopper. Dubbed The Criminal Enterprises, the update’s trailer shows the city of Los Santos ravaged by a record-high heatwave and soaring gas prices.

As seen in the official tweet by Rockstar ‘The Southern San Andreas economy is in crisis. Gas prices have spiked to their highest levels in decades, supply chains are in turmoil, and a ferocious heatwave is gripping the state.’

The update won’t leave players clamoring around in the extreme heat unable to afford to drive for long though, as a new mission, ‘Operation Paper Trail,’ gives teams of up to four players the chance to follow the titular paper trail to the root of these rapid and detrimental changes to the San Andreas ecosystem. According to in-game lore, the IAA suspects the fault to lie with a criminal conspiracy started by the Duggans, but that might not necessarily be the case.

If your playstyle is dabbling in the life of crime, you’re about to cash in on the recent changes as executives, gunrunners, nightclub owners, and bikers will have the opportunity to turn tragedy into profit when the update goes live on July 26th

There are rumors that the new update will be even more far-reaching than Rockstar has stated, letting players leave San Andreas, but we’ll have to wait for the update to determine whether this theory holds any water.

We’re also getting a new Benefactor based on the McLaren Stirling Moss, and a few new models under the Declasse banner. Another exciting addition is a new weaponized bike.

This update is much-needed after the extended Diamond Casino Heist event, but what we’re even more excited about is the fact that GTA VI is coming. Rockstar recently hired new employees for the title and has put Red Dead Online on hold to focus on the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto.

I hail from the awe-inspiring beauty of South Africa. Born and raised in Pretoria, I've always had a deep interest in local history, particularly conflicts, architecture, and our country's rich past of being a plaything for European aristocracy. 'Tis an attempt at humor. My interest in history has since translated into hours at a time researching everything from the many reasons the Titanic sank (really, it's a wonder she ever left Belfast) to why Minecraft is such a feat of human technological accomplishment. I am an avid video gamer (Sims 4 definitely counts as video gaming, I checked) and particularly enjoy playing the part of a relatively benign overlord in Minecraft. I enjoy the diverse experiences gaming offers the player. Within the space of a few hours, a player can go from having a career as an interior decorator in Sims, to training as an archer under Niruin in Skyrim. I believe video games have so much more to teach humanity about community, kindness, and loyalty, and I enjoy the opportunity to bring concepts of the like into literary pieces.
